Winifred Hazelton Kernohan, 92, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Southern Kentucky on May 25, 2023, with dignity and family at her side. She was born to the late William Fred Hazelton and Clara Conn Hazelton on August 4, 1930, in Dungannon, Northern Ireland. In addition to her parents, Winifred was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Kernohan (“Bill”), and her beloved daughter Valerie Kernohan Sharpstone.
Winifred played field hockey through high school and graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Winifred worked as a medical social worker in Northern Ireland for several years. After getting married in 1959, Winifred began the adventure of a lifetime, immigrating with Bill to Saskatchewan, Canada, then to Kentucky in 1960 to raise and care for their family and help Bill start his medical practice.
Winifred was a fiercely devoted mother and wife with an impeccable flair for decorating, entertaining, fine antiques, and outdoor landscaping. Her Christmas Eve parties, tenderloin, and Irish Coffee were legendary. Winifred never shied away from hard work or sacrifice and was known for her strong determination and will, even while facing physical disability or adversity.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Janine Kernohan, her son John Kernohan (Frederica), and adored grandchildren, Katharine Sharpstone Izzo (Patrick), Samuel Kernohan, and Stuart Kernohan.
